Disappearing Act: A Kendra Smith Sampler, 1981-1998
It’s been well over a decade since Kendra Smith has been heard from, musically at least. If she’s mentioned at all these days, it’s usually as the co-founder of Opal, the band that would eventually morph (without Smith) into Mazzy Star. Or perhaps there was a flurry of interest when critics started mentioning Opal as a touchstone for blog faves Beach House. But for the most part, she’s been relegated to footnote status – and considering that almost all of the recordings she’s been involved in are long out of print, one imagines Kendra prefers it that way. But the music deserves to be heard! So I’ve put together a one disc compilation that stretches from one of her earliest recordings (a German language cover of the Velvets’ “All Tomorrow’s Parties”) to what I believe was her final live performance to date in 1998. In between, you’ll hear songs from The Dream Syndicate, Rainy Day and Opal, as well as some fantastic solo tunes. It all hangs together quite nicely, with plenty of the hazy, dreamlike sounds that Smith made her trademark. Enjoy!

I got locked outta my old hard drive but a friend was good enough to re-up this mix for me http://www95.zippyshare.com/v/6rDjCfZU/file.html
if you’re kendra smith or run that blog hit me up and ill take the link down
i know i have a tendency to pick really specific little things and fixate on them for a few weeks months but yknow, some stick around
so obviously the 60s dudley moore/peter cook bedazzled is some of the dopest shit i ever seen, i dont feel like thats a tough sell
this bit though i’m pretty sure is on the level of like cramps at napa asylum or the guitar solo from “i heard her call my name” where its just the obvious apex point of one really specific cultural moment
what i’m trying to say, is that this is the dopest shit i ever seen
http://www11.zippyshare.com/v/e2Xx4oTg/file.html
i bought this as a 19th birthday present for myself at Open Mind in SF (RIP, them getting some floor space in a bougie furniture store in alamo square or becoming the record section at Green Apple books doesnt count, the one on market street down the street from cafe du nord is where i got like 60% of my Fall records) during a period where i was amassing hours and hours of VU boots off dimeadozen and anywhere else I could it was the only thing i’d ever heard from the nico period that wasnt just a 20 minute jam like melody laughter or the nothing song or loop or whatever, those are all pretty good on their own merit but i mean this was what i actually wanted
not that it even matters but discogs doesnt even seem to have a record of the marbled blue copy i have, changes nothing about the record other than as part of the whole obsessive record collector dick measuring contest
i never heard another one and when they did the billionth rerelease of VU and nico with that 66 live set appended to it I just assumed it was the same show but turns out its something else and kind of way better with comparable if not better sound quality (I know cause ive listened to both incessantly all week), i pulled it out the other day and its a really incredible one, very different from the valleydale ballroom thing, a lot more aggro, a dude crashing on my couch one night where i just stayed up listening to it over and over again had assumed it was some punk band doing a VU tribute set
the one that was on the rerelease says its from columbus ohio november 4th, but this thing says this its cleveland ohio november 4th and its just not the same thing, and i spent fuckin hours reading old dudes online argue over which was which, theyre probably all selections from one big recording since bands actually did 2 sets a night back then, maybe they did both cities november 4th
anyway this is a fucking must hear, i would say you should listen to it very very loudly and just let it tear you to shreds
i made a youtube channel so i could upload some shit i thought should be up there
once i get my shit together i;m gonna rip this insane vu + nico live boot ive had for a while that smokes the one they put on the reissue from a few years ago but thats probably gonna get deleted for copyright shit and ive been saying im gonna rip it since 2008
got asked to make a mix themed around “Nic Cage’s Snakeskin Jacket in Wild at Heart” which is basically a freebie
it is here
